The Story
Years earlier, teenage Chen stands beside a lit birthday cake when a silent, glowing blue sphere drifts in through the window. Therefore it crosses the room and brushes against his parents—but in an instant it reduces them to ash, while the candles, the wallpaper, and even his own skin remain completely, eerily untouched.
That impossible selectivity never leaves him. Therefore Chen buries his grief in study, training for years as an atmospheric physicist and chasing storms the length of China, determined to understand the phenomenon that erased his parents so cleanly and completely.
His obsession eventually draws the attention of Major Lin Yun, who recruits him onto a secret military research team. She does not want ball lightning explained for curiosity's sake alone—she wants it captured, tamed, and turned into a weapon.
Progress stalls for years until theoretical physicist Ding Yi joins the team. But he reframes the entire problem overnight: ball lightning isn't an electrical phenomenon at all—it is the excited state of a wholly new fundamental particle he names the 'macro-electron.'
Ding Yi's theory explains the mystery at last: macro-electrons sit everywhere around us in a hidden, harmless ground state, and turn devastating only when excited. Therefore the team learns to trap them one by one, and trigger that excitation on command.
Further testing then reveals something stranger still: the resulting blast can be precisely tuned to destroy one material only—wood, or living flesh, or a silicon circuit board—while leaving every other object in that very same room completely, perfectly, eerily untouched.
The team proves this selectivity first on animals, killing them cleanly and repeatedly to confirm the weapon behaves exactly as tuned. Therefore command approves it for real deployment—the theory built from Chen's own tragedy is now ready to be aimed at people.
The first true test comes at a nuclear power plant, where armed eco-terrorists are holding child hostages deep inside. Lin Yun gives the order: fire the anti-personnel weapon, tuned narrowly to affect only human tissue, sparing the reactor entirely.
But the blast kills every terrorist in that room—and every child hostage alongside them, without exception. Therefore the reactor stands afterward completely untouched, and the mission is logged coldly as a clean, surgical success, at least on paper.
For Chen, that precision is the horror, not the mercy. A weapon this exact can kill without hesitation or conscience—therefore he resigns from the very program he helped build, and walks away from it for good.
Meanwhile, open war finally breaks out between China and its enemies. Command deploys a battlefield ball-lightning strike against the advancing front line—but enemy countermeasures neutralize it almost instantly, proving this weapon alone cannot decide a real war.
Therefore the surviving team pushes the underlying theory further still, past single macro-electrons toward what they call 'macro-atomic nuclei.' They theorize macro-fusion: a reaction that could unleash devastation on a far larger scale, while remaining just as selective.
Weighing the risk of uncontrollable escalation against any battlefield gain, the military formally orders all macro-fusion research halted at once. The line between a usable weapon and outright catastrophe, command decides, has grown far too thin to cross.
But Major Lin Yun refuses outright to obey the halt order. She has come to believe, completely and unshakably, that only one unthinkably terrible weapon can end war for good—and she will not stop one test short of proving it.
Therefore she personally triggers a live macro-fusion test in open defiance of command, fully knowing it will kill her. The reaction ignites in a single blinding instant, and Lin Yun dies right there, at its exact center.
The resulting blast sweeps outward across a wide stretch of China, frying microprocessors and crippling the country's own defenses in the process—a devastating wound the weapon turns inward, onto the very side that built and unleashed it.
But that same demonstration also proves the weapon's precise, terrifying power to every watching enemy nation. Therefore they sue for peace within days—the long war ends not through conquest or victory, but through sheer, calculated dread.
In the aftermath, Ding Yi finally tells Chen something he has kept hidden all along: death by macro-electron is not true annihilation. Those the weapon takes seem to persist afterward in a strange quantum state, occasionally able to touch the world again.
Therefore an apparition of Lin Yun appears quietly before her father, General Lin Fusheng. They speak together briefly, father and daughter one last time—then she vanishes again, as suddenly as she arrived.
Later, Lin Yun leaves Chen an invisible rose—no scent, no weight, no visible proof at all except his own quiet certainty that it is truly there. A private, wordless sign that she has not entirely left him.
Ding Yi keeps one photograph in his apartment, showing Lin Yun's strange new existence alongside the children and the test animals the weapon once killed—all of them, it seems, somehow still quietly, patiently present.
Near the very end, an American researcher visits Chen with unsettling news: in careful trials, macro-electrons behaved exactly as though watched, even under the strictest no-observer conditions. Who, or what, is watching is left deliberately open.
What it means
A perfectly selective weapon can still be monstrous—precision without mercy is only slaughter dressed in cleaner clothes. And the deeper lesson beneath the physics is stranger than the war itself: death may be nothing more than a change of state, while something out there, perhaps, is quietly watching all of it.
