The Story
Jimmy McGrath, a rough-edged Canadian friend down on his luck, pays wandering adventurer Anthony Cade handsomely to deliver Count Stylptitch's explosive political memoirs to a London publisher, therefore Anthony also agrees, purely as a favor, to carry old blackmail letters back to a stranger named Virginia Revel.
Rival factions on both sides of the Herzoslovakian question fear the memoirs will wreck their planned restoration, therefore shadowy agents bribe, threaten, and ambush Anthony clear across Europe, and he crosses the Channel bruised but unbroken, determined to see both packages delivered.
In London, the hotel waiter Giuseppe steals the blackmail letters, mistaking them for the far more valuable memoirs, and threatens Virginia Revel with public exposure, but within days he is found shot dead in a ditch near Staines, the stolen letters gone from his body.
A forged telegram lures every servant from Virginia's house for the evening, therefore she is alone when she walks into her own study and stumbles onto her blackmailer's corpse on the floor, a revolver engraved 'Virginia' lying close beside the body.
Anthony, arriving at her door moments later on his own errand, helps the terrified Virginia hide the body and buries the incriminating pistol deep inside a hollow tree, therefore Virginia escapes immediate suspicion, but that engraved gun's true story is far from finished.
Meanwhile George Lomax, a scheming politician chasing a lucrative oil deal, browbeats reluctant Lord Caterham into hosting a foreign royal at his estate, Chimneys, therefore secrets both personal and political begin quietly converging under a single roof that fateful weekend.
The mysterious guest turns out to be Prince Michael Obolovitch, heir to Herzoslovakia's shaky throne, therefore Anthony and Virginia are both separately drawn to Chimneys as well, their errands, their budding romance, and their danger folding into the same house party.
Also gathered at Chimneys are Superintendent Battle, a famously steady Scotland Yard detective, and Boris, Prince Michael's fiercely loyal servant, therefore the crowded old house now holds princes, politicians, detectives, and hidden agendas circling one another under the same ancient roof.
That night, a single shot rings out from the locked Council Chamber at a quarter to midnight, therefore Battle is summoned immediately, and the dead man sprawled inside is first mistaken for a mere impostor calling himself 'Count Stanislaus.'
But careful examination confirms the body is genuinely Prince Michael himself, therefore the murder instantly becomes a matter of state, and suspicion swings hard toward Anthony, whose muddy boots exactly match footprints pressed into the soil beneath the window.
Virginia quietly vouches for exactly where Anthony stood that entire night, therefore Battle looks elsewhere for his man, but the widening investigation soon uncovers a motive buried far deeper than any single house party could explain.
Years earlier, the master jewel thief King Victor and a clever actress, Angèle Mory, posing as 'Queen Varaga,' stole Herzoslovakia's entire crown jewels and swapped the real gems for worthless paste, therefore one true diamond of immense value still lies hidden somewhere in England.
Only the murdered Count Stylptitch ever knew exactly where it lay, therefore a coded letter written by the dead Queen herself surfaces and is painstakingly decrypted, pointing straight to a Holbein portrait hanging inside that same Council Chamber.
Anthony and Virginia dig eagerly behind that portrait that same night, therefore they uncover only some buttons, a bit of knitting, and one stray letter 'E' — a decoy deliberately planted to send any searcher entirely the wrong way.
A careful nighttime stakeout finally catches an intruder creeping through the chamber, therefore the investigators gain one genuine ally: Lemoine of the French Sûreté, who has been held captive at Dover this entire time by a clever impostor.
That impostor is soon exposed as King Victor himself, calmly disguised as 'Lemoine' among the very houseguests hunting him, therefore every alibi and every friendly face inside Chimneys is suddenly thrown back into serious doubt.
Mademoiselle Brun, the household's mild and unremarkable French governess, is unmasked as Angèle Mory, King Victor's old partner in crime, therefore it becomes clear she has been quietly searching Chimneys for the hidden diamond at his side all along.
Studying the cipher once more, Anthony realizes it truly points not to the library at all but to the rose garden outside, therefore he quietly lets it be known — falsely — that the diamond lies hidden inside the library instead.
He also discovers Brun's revolver, still engraved 'Virginia,' deliberately planted inside financier Herman Isaacstein's own suitcase, therefore Anthony now holds proof enough to force every remaining searcher toward one final, decisive reckoning that same fateful night.
That night Brun creeps toward the rose garden to finally claim the diamond, therefore Boris, recognizing her at last as the woman who murdered his beloved prince, lunges at her in sudden fury, and she dies in the violent struggle that follows.
King Victor, still disguised as 'Lemoine,' seizes the chaos to grab the diamond and bolt for the gate, but Hiram Fish — revealed at last as an American Pinkerton detective all along — tackles him bodily and captures him on the spot.
The freed real Lemoine confirms the impostor's identity beyond doubt, therefore King Victor's long, glittering career of theft and disguise ends abruptly in handcuffs, and Herzoslovakia's crown jewel is finally recovered fully intact.
In the quiet that follows, Anthony reveals one final secret of his own: he is in truth Prince Nicholas Obolovitch, the rightful surviving heir, therefore he can marry Virginia and settle Herzoslovakia's entire succession crisis in the very same breath.
He admits he once refused the throne's absurd pageantry outright, but seeing clearly what accepting it now means for Virginia and for a broken little country changes his mind completely, therefore Boris kneels at once and gives him his full loyalty.
Jimmy McGrath finally arrives with Stylptitch's genuine memoirs, never actually burned at all, only swapped long ago for a harmless dummy manuscript, therefore he collects a handsome payment and happily delivers the true pages to the waiting publisher.
