The Story

On Kunlun Mountain, high above the mortal world, the quiet disciple Si Yin studies medicine and the arts of war for many long years under her stern but deeply devoted teacher, the God of War, Mo Yuan, and slowly, without ever once admitting it aloud, falls completely and quietly in love with him.

When the long-imprisoned Demon Lord Qing Cang finally breaks toward freedom, threatening every realm at once, Mo Yuan chooses to seal him away himself, shattering his own body in the effort and scattering his soul across the heavens so the seal will hold no matter the cost to him.

Si Yin, in truth the powerful fox goddess Bai Qian of Qing Qiu, carries her teacher's frozen, unconscious body home across the realms herself and keeps a silent, decades-long vigil at his side, refusing to leave the ice that holds what remains of the man she loves.

Years later, a heavenly trial required of every immortal seals away Bai Qian's memory and her power completely, and she is sent down to live an entire mortal life as a fragile, half-blind girl named Su Su, with no knowledge left of who she truly is or was.

In her mortal life, Su Su meets the young immortal Crown Prince Ye Hua and falls genuinely in love with him, never realizing that he already recognizes her as the very fox goddess he has been betrothed to since infancy, though he chooses to say nothing of it yet.

Breaking Heaven's strict law against any immortal loving a mortal, Ye Hua secretly hides Su Su inside the Heavenly Palace, disguising her as a lowly servant girl, so that their forbidden love can go on quietly, hidden in plain sight from his own powerful and unforgiving family.

Su Jin, an ambitious woman of the Heaven Tribe who wants Ye Hua for herself, grows jealous of the hidden servant she suspects he loves, and quietly frames Su Su for a serious crime, one that under Heaven's law carries nothing less than a sentence of death.

To save Su Su from execution, Ye Hua disguises himself and carries out her punishment with his own hand, blinding her himself rather than let another do it, while secretly stepping into the lightning strike meant to kill her, taking the true punishment onto his own body instead.

Through it all, Zhe Yan, the Peach Blossom God and old friend to both Mo Yuan and Bai Qian's family, quietly tends Su Su's wounds afterward, unable to undo what has been done, able only to ease the pain of a girl who still believes the prince she loved has abandoned her completely.

Believing that the prince who blinded her no longer loves her at all, a grieving, sightless Su Su gives birth to their son, Ah Li, and then, unable to bear the loss, quietly takes her own life soon afterward, leaving the newborn boy behind in the Heavenly Palace.

Because her deepest self was always immortal, Bai Qian's spirit returns to Qing Qiu once Su Su's mortal body dies, and there, following ancient custom, she drinks the waters that erase every memory of that mortal life, forgetting entirely that she was ever Su Su, or Ye Hua's love.

In the centuries that follow, Bai Qian grows into one of the great powers of the fox clan at Qing Qiu, watched over by her brother Bai Zhen and her old friend Zhe Yan, the Peach Blossom God, all while the mortal life she can no longer remember quietly waits, unspoken, inside her own heart.

Centuries pass before a grown, powerful Bai Qian saves a small boy from kidnappers at a royal banquet, only to learn moments later that the boy is Ah Li, and that his father is none other than Ye Hua, the immortal prince she has been betrothed to since infancy.

Ye Hua clearly recognizes in this new Bai Qian the mortal girl he once loved and lost, yet chooses to say nothing of that painful past, so the two of them, along with young Ah Li, move steadily toward an arranged marriage as two people who feel like near-strangers.

Bai Qian and Ye Hua marry, and despite the marriage having been arranged for them since childhood, a real and unexpected love grows steadily between them, warm and entirely new, since Bai Qian still carries no memory at all of the mortal life and love they once shared.

Still bitter after all this time, Su Jin tells Bai Qian that a mortal servant named Su Su once died for Ye Hua's sake, deliberately planting the cruel suspicion that his marriage to Bai Qian was built only on guilt, and never on any genuine love for her at all.

Using an old artifact that Ye Hua once gave her without explanation, Bai Qian unlocks the memories that were sealed away long ago, and her whole buried mortal life returns to her at once, complete with the betrayal, the blinding, and the lonely death she once chose for herself.

Shattered by everything she now remembers, Bai Qian withdraws in grief to her home in Qing Qiu and refuses to see him, yet Ye Hua does not leave her; instead he simply waits outside her door for as long as it takes, offering no defense, only quiet, unbroken patience.

Before Bai Qian and Ye Hua can fully mend what stands between them, the sealed Demon Lord Qing Cang tears himself free of his ancient binding at last, and the same terrible danger that Mo Yuan once bled to contain now rises again to threaten every realm in the heavens.

Without waiting for permission or for any help from the rest of Heaven, Ye Hua goes alone to reseal Qing Cang himself, spending every last piece of his own power in the fight, and Bai Qian arrives only in time to watch him vanish beneath the surface of freezing river ice.

Everyone across the heavens, Bai Qian included, believes that Ye Hua has died sealing the demon lord away for good, and the raw grief that follows her now is the very same grief she once carried, unknowingly, as the blind, brokenhearted mortal girl Su Su, long before she remembered.

Yet Ye Hua's desperate final sacrifice completes the soul that Mo Yuan lost when he first sealed Qing Cang away so long ago, and because of it her old teacher finally wakes, whole again at last, after tens of thousands of years spent frozen and unconscious inside the ice.

Ye Hua has not actually died after all; gravely wounded but alive, he survives the ordeal in secret, and once he is found, he and Bai Qian are joyfully reunited, her memory now whole and unbroken, her love for him certain across every single life she has ever lived.

Mo Yuan, restored and finally awake once more, sees with perfect clarity exactly where Bai Qian's heart has settled, and steps back from any claim on her with love rather than rivalry or bitterness, choosing instead to remain her most cherished teacher and dearest friend, nothing more than that.

What it means

This is a story about memory as both wound and mercy: forgetting once spared Bai Qian unbearable grief, and yet only by remembering everything, fully and painfully, could her love finally become whole, proof that sacrifice freely given always finds its way home, no matter how many lifetimes or how much ice stand in the way.
